“The most comfortable shoe ever” – Nike Cortez

More than 40 years ago, one of the best American marathon runners, made this claim referring to this shoe. The history of this model and what took Nike to make it, explains much of the disruptive DNA of the firm. The story begins with the jogging fever that invaded the USA on the 60’s. A bit similar to what we are living nowadays. Everybody, of any age and physical condition, starts to run. I don’t blame them. Running is addictive.

One of the cofounders of Nike held a position as athletic trainer at the University of Oregon. He believed that the athletes needed a more cushioning shoe. Following these beliefs, he began to experiment with different designs. After more than 2400km of testing, he ends the design of the Cortez. Four years later, on 1972, the Nike Cortez were released. On Munich 1972 Olympic Games the shoes are seen on the feet of the American athletics team. The success was inmediate for Nike. A detail to be highlighted is that the Cortez started to be used outside the tracks, as an urban shoe. This was particularly true at the universities where the athletes started to wear them after the training sessions.

This reissue of the first running shoe made by Nike comes in grey suede with the swoosh in a golden shade. It includes two pairs of shoelaces in two different colours
