Nike Tailwind

Nike Tailwind

In 1978 when Nike decided to install air chambers in sneakers, the brand was probably not aware of how it would change the world of sneakers forever. That's how the Nike Tailwind was first developed, and with the pride of that historic milestone the model continues to be re-issued and updated for the present day. Nike Tailwind boasts a wide range of models that are totally different from each other, but they all have one thing in common: they made history.

Nike Tailwind 79

The novel technology of including air capsules in the midsole came about thanks to the work of aeronautical engineer Frank Rudy. His invention was offered to Nike, which did not take long to produce the new system in a massive way. His first Nike Air model debuted at the Honolulu Marathon in Hawaii in December 1978. Incidentally, his presentation to the world didn't go too well. The Tailwind's air chambers were decompressing at every kilometer, and Nike understood that it had to improve the shape. The problem was, strange as it may seem, in the colorway: the metal particles of the silver paint were progressively cutting the interior with the friction of each step. Nike decided to use other colors to solve it, but more problems came.

When it was released to the general public, the Nike Tailwind went quite unnoticed. The technological innovation was met with some rejection at first, due to the appearance of this system in the silhouette, among other things. Years later, the style revolution came to the sneaker market, and the Tailwind suddenly became a coveted piece, receiving the value it deserved. Today, after a series of masterful reworkings including a Nike x Undercover collaboration, the Nike Tailwind 79 is more alive than ever.

Nike Tailwind IV

It was in the late 1990s when the Nike Air Max Tailwind IV was launched. Faithful to the Nike Air Tailwind legacy, it had its moment of obscurity but were later resurrected as the phoenix. Its chunky aesthetics, its Y2K era style, and its street look but with urban sophistication have turned it into one of the main trendsetting must-have items of the new wave of nostalgia of the nineties. It has been reinterpreted in a collaboration with Supreme, reissued in different colors, and has sold out again and again. The Nike Air Max Tailwind 4 is undoubtedly one of the most important sneaker models of recent times.
