Barbour's history dates back to 1894, when John Barbour founded Barbour & Sons in South Shields, a small fishing village just a few miles from Newcastle. The brand's early focus was on making waterproof, practical, waxed jackets, especially for fishermen, hunters, sailors and other inhabitants of the coastal areas of the UK, which are prone to rain and bad weather. Little did John Barbour know at the time that his then newborn jackets would become authentic style and status totems for generations to come.

From the countryside to Buckingham Palace

During the 20th century, the popularity of Barbour and its sober, waxed coats grew steadily. So much so that they even reached the British Royal Family, becoming one of the favourite brands of the upper classes and the and aristocracy in the United Kingdom. And so it was that a manufacturer of garments designed by and for the countryside was awarded a Royal Warrant of Appointment by the Duke of Edinburgh in 1974.

Barbour takes to the streets

In the 1980s, Margaret Barbour, then CEO of the company, designed what are surely the most famous, beloved and legendary models of the brand, such as the Border, the Bedale or the iconic Beaufort popularised by Lady Di herself, making it a cult object among the young Londoners of the time.

Since then, the brand's reputation has only grown, flirting with the latest trends while remaining true to its essence. This has meant that their designs have transcended their original target audience and found their way into the wardrobes of sneakerheads, fashionistas and streetwear lovers all over the world.
