MICHAEL JORDAN, SINCE 1984

It all began when Michael Jordan was simply Mike. Nike already had a presence in professional basketball but needed a player capable of taking the brand beyond the court. Michael hardly knew Nike, but he chose them for their determination: they were willing to bet everything on him. Together, they created a structure unheard of in basketball and team sports in general, a line bearing his name and his team’s colors.

The Jordan 1 is the best example of how the world of sneakers has evolved. It introduced concepts that remain four decades later, such as storytelling, the use of color as a narrative tool, and the notion of exclusivity. However, Jordan did not want its relevance tied to the past: each new model created a new myth, first around Michael Jordan and later with athletes, artists, and creators who shared his values.

The idea of Jordan as an entity independent from Nike emerged with the Jordan 3, a vision by Tinker Hatfield that became reality in 1997. It marked the birth of a brand that originated in basketball, grew within popular culture and music, and continued expanding into other sports such as baseball, American football, soccer, and boxing.

The evolution of Jordan as a brand draws on its essential designs—Jordan 3, Jordan 5, Jordan 7, Jordan 9, and Jordan 11—while also seeking to update the stories associated with them, driven by a new generation that brings renewed meaning.
