The brand most closely linked to the world of extreme mountaineering was born next to a California beach in 1964, founded by Douglas Tompkins and Dick Klopp, two friends passionate about hiking. The name refers to the north face of a mountain — the coldest side and the one most exposed to extreme weather conditions.

Two years after opening their first store, the partners began producing their own clothing. The brand, which also sponsored memorable expeditions, became in the 1980s the only one offering a complete collection of high-performance mountain clothing and equipment.
