The origins of the Stan Smith date back to the 1960s, when it was designed as an all-leather tennis shoe featuring adidas’ signature perforated Three Stripes on the sides. Initially associated with French tennis player Robert Haillet, the model continued to be sold even after his retirement.

In the early 1970s, the shoe became linked to Stan Smith, a polite and charismatic Californian who was considered the world’s best player in 1972 and won two Grand Slam titles (US Open in 1971 and Wimbledon in 1972). His greatest achievements came in the Davis Cup, which he won seven times. After a few adjustments to the heel and tongue, the sneaker officially adopted his name, establishing itself both on and off the court.

From the court to the street

During the 1980s, the Stan Smith moved beyond its direct connection to tennis and became a fashion staple. Its clean, balanced design allowed it to blend naturally into a wide range of styles, particularly in its classic white version with green details.

This timeless character also attracted key figures from fashion and contemporary culture such as Phoebe Philo, Pierpaolo Piccioli, and Raf Simons. Over the years, the silhouette has served as the base for collaborations with brands and creatives including BAPE, Stella McCartney, Star Wars, The Simpsons, and Pharrell Williams.
