In the 1950s, Alpha Industries popularized it with the MA-1 model, created for pilots during the Vietnam War. Made from nylon, its reversible design with an orange lining made it easier to spot in case of an accident, while the collar was designed to accommodate a helmet. Original designs also included straps for the oxygen mask.
