Champion Tears

The latest collaboration between creative genius Tremaine Emory and Champion is now a reality. Champion Tears is a sportswear collection that takes its name from this cultural consultant's alias, Denim Tears, and its inspiration from the influential legacy of African-American choreographer Alvin Ailey and the dance company and cultural centre that bears his name.

A Renaissance man for our times

Describing Tremaine Emory is no easy task. Not only because we're talking about one of today's most interesting creative talents, but also because we're dealing with a cultural agitator who's involved in all manner of activities in the world of music, fashion and nightlife. A glance at Tremaine's impressive CV shows that he has worked for major enterprises, top hotels and luxury brands, as well as for small independent companies and record labels. This, together with his work as a music curator for a club in London and his activity as a party promoter all over the world through the collective he co-founded, No Vacancy Inn, may give us an insight into how important this New Yorker by birth and Londoner by adoption has become in the industry.

Champion’s Reverse Weave: the heritage of sport

In common with other brands that have been making clothes for athletes and sportsmen and women since their origins, Champion has a line of garments that, although they draw directly from its tradition and historical archive, are revised, updated and put on sale through exclusive launches. Unlike their mainstream counterparts, these are only available in selected shops and are aimed at an audience for whom the line between fashion and sport is often so fine as to be almost invisible. Pray welcome Champion’s Reverse Weave: high-end sportswear that combines old-school quality with contemporary taste and style.

Two legends come together

Tremaine Emory has conceived Champions Tears by drawing on the historical archive and materials of the American brand's high-end line, Champion's Reverse Weave, and by drawing inspiration from the legacy of African-American choreographer Alvin Ailey and the dance company and cultural centre that bears his name. A collection of garments in which Champion's university legacy lives on through varsity jackets, embroidered lettering or athletic tracksuits combined with logos in the form of a double AA or texts and colours that refer to Alvin Ailey himself, the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA), and the Pan-African flag.

Style, culture and activism come together in a collection that is much more than just a series of sportswear. On the contrary, Champion Tears is an artistic exploration of African-American culture and inequality through the personal experiences of Ailey and Emory himself in New York City . One of the most interesting conceptual proposals of the moment that is now available at FOOTDISTRICT.
