Engineered Garments is the brand created by Daiki Suzuki, born out of his cross-cultural journey between Japan and the United States. Inspired by American cultures and with the attention to detail of Asian craftsmen.
Daiki Suzuki grew up in Japan during an era when a stylistic movement, rather than a social one, was taking shape, influenced by iconic American designs. Styles like Americana or Ivy League initially found their way to Japan as second-hand goods, later evolving into unique interpretations native to Japan.
Suzuki served as a conduit between the United States and Japan, working as a buyer and importer for Nepenthes, and gaining firsthand exposure to American fashion before establishing his own label, Engineered Garments, under the Nepenthes umbrella.
Engineered Garments and Nepenthes
The Nepenthes group emerged in the 1980s as a way to bring American style to consumers in Tokyo and grew from there with brands like Engineered Garments, Needles, or South2 West8, each with its own identity.
The goal of Engineered Garments is to create garments that obtain their personality from the experiences lived with them, with unique constructions and hidden meanings that escape from design as a perfect tool.
