Nicolas Mermoud and Jean-Luc Diard, two experienced runners in the mountain footwear industry, devised a shoe that responded to prevailing minimalism with a maximalist sole inspired by bicycle wheels, which was quickly adopted by trail runners.

The company's original name, Hoka One One, comes from a Maori expression meaning "fly over the earth."
