ADIDAS AND KAREEM ABDUL-JABBAR

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was adidas' first major contract in American basketball. A colossal figure on and off the court, his relationship with the brand marked the beginning of a new era for adidas in professional sports. Beyond the game, Kareem was a committed activist, and his collaboration with adidas reflected both athletic excellence and social conscience.

Since 1970, Kareem wore adidas sneakers, although it wasn't until the mid-decade that he received his own personalized model. This footwear appeared in Jabbar Hi and Jabbar Lo versions, standing out for its advanced design for the time and for the fact that Kareem was a pioneer in wearing low-cut sneakers on the court.

LEGACY AND TIMELESS STYLE

The adidas Jabbar was inspired by the models the player wore during his early years, such as the adidas Tournament —later known as Campus—, the adidas Superstar and the Superstar II. The original design included the characteristic shell toe, adapted to his playing style, along with a recognizable herringbone sole. The current re-release incorporates an iconic image on the tongue: Kareem's mythical skyhook.

Its history and aesthetics have served as a reference for collaborations with brands such as Maharishi and UNDFTD, as well as for contemporary designers such as Willy Chavarria or Jerry Lorenzo at Fear of God. A model with a past, but also with a strong present.
