When New Balance first released the 990 in 1982, it had one clear goal in mind: to create the best shoe possible. Four decades later, each update refreshes materials and design while maintaining the same idea: only the best.
At a time when jogging was the trendy sport, brands competed to create affordable shoes with eye-catching colours, but New Balance chose the opposite approach. A shoe for the runner who seeks excellence rather than attention. Four years of development, the best materials, and expert craftsmanship for a Made in the USA product that first appeared in grey to establish the standard we all associate with the brand today. The New Balance 990 was also the first running shoe priced over $100.
The New Balance 990 V2, the second version of the 990, arrived in 1998 with a proposal for a new material, ABZORB, and a groundbreaking design.
To commemorate the 30th anniversary of the original 990, the New Balance 990 V3 was released in 2012, an evolution that expertly combined mesh and lifestyle with premium materials.
The New Balance 990 V4 debuted in 2016 to mark a trend: "dad shoes." Collaborations with Stüssy, Joe Freshgood, JJJJJound, and Stüssy helped to solidify the company's legacy.
Three years later, the New Balance 990 V5 simplified lines while maintaining the same style, the wise combination of mesh and pigskin, and of course, grey as the base colour, with new combinations added later.
The most recent release, the New Balance 990 V6, softens some of the lines seen in the V3 and V4, resulting in a more streamlined silhouette. For the first time, the N rests on mesh.
FOOTDISTRICT carries the New Balance 990 style in all of its iterations, from the V1 to the V6, including its transition from running to lifestyle.
