A NEW LANGUAGE FOR AIR MAX

Until the mid-1990s, all Air Max models had been designed by Tinker Hatfield. Things changed when Sergio Lozano, then part of the ACG division, was chosen to design the next Air Max. Rather than replicate previous formulas, Lozano reinterpreted what Air Max had become, acknowledging its cultural relevance beyond performance. The result was a silhouette that introduced key innovations, including the first visible Air unit in the forefoot.

The Nike Air Max 95 evolved not only in terms of technology but also in its communication. It featured its own logo and a custom box, underlining its unique place in the Nike universe. From its design to its visual identity, everything pointed in a new direction.

ORGANIC AND STRUCTURAL DESIGN

The AM95 drew inspiration from two main sources. First, the erosion of soil layers by rain in the Oregon landscape, which translated into a layered design and a black midsole that helped conceal stains. Second, the human body—its sole mimicking a spine and overlays referencing muscles and tendons.

The choice of grey and neon green as signature colors gave the model an instantly recognizable identity that remains iconic to this day. Beyond footwear, the Air Max 95 positioned itself as a statement of design and intent.

GLOBAL IMPACT AND SERGIO LOZANO’S LEGACY

The launch was an immediate success, particularly in Japan, where it fueled one of the earliest secondary markets for sneakers. This global impact positioned Sergio Lozano as one of Nike’s key designers in the following decade, with models like the Air Max 96 II, AM98, Max 2001, Shox, and Zoom Drive.

The Air Max 95 paved the way for a new approach within Nike, where sneakers could be both performance tools and cultural icons. Its influence has remained intact, with reissues and new audiences discovering it over the years.

COLLABORATIONS AND URBAN CULTURE

The Air Max 95’s urban character has been central to its longevity. Its versatile design and ability to integrate multiple visual codes made it the perfect canvas for standout collaborations with Stash, Corteiz, Dave White, Atmos, Parra, Carhartt WIP, and COMME des GARÇONS.

This openness to reinterpretation has kept the AM95 culturally relevant across fashion, art, and street culture.
