The coldest face

The brand most closely linked to the world of extreme mountaineering was born next to a California beach in 1964, founded by Douglas Tompkins and Dick Klopp, two friends passionate about hiking. The name refers to the north face of a mountain — the coldest side and the one most exposed to extreme weather conditions.

Two years after opening their first store, the partners began producing their own clothing. The brand, which also sponsored memorable expeditions, became in the 1980s the only one offering a complete collection of high-performance mountain clothing and equipment. In the 1990s, The North Face expanded its catalogue with sportswear and casual pieces, eventually becoming a must-have brand within modern streetwear.

Cutting-edge technology

Over the last 50 years, The North Face has introduced numerous innovations and technologies, always focused on functionality, comfort, durability, and protection for mountain enthusiasts. The brand was one of the first to integrate Gore-Tex into its garments, creating highly waterproof products capable of withstanding the harshest weather conditions.

Its catalogue also includes widely recognized technologies such as Thermoball, FlashDry, Polartec, TKA, and Fuseform. Breathability, heat retention, and versatility are key characteristics of The North Face clothing. A clear example of this success is that The North Face jackets and coats have become some of the most common garments not only in the mountains and countryside but also in urban environments.

The Gorpcore Master

Several years ago, hiking aesthetics began to influence the urban landscape, and today this fusion is fully established. Urban fashion embraced the look of adventurers and mountain hikers and brought it into the cities under a new name: gorpcore.

From the world’s biggest fashion runways to everyday streetwear, gorpcore has grown into a global trend embraced by different communities, countries, and styles. The imagery of mountaineering, hiking, and climbing has been reinterpreted by both urban and high-fashion brands, becoming an endless source of inspiration for premium garments that combine luxury design with rugged outdoor functionality.

And within this movement, no brand could occupy the throne other than The North Face. The brand has successfully integrated its most technical garments into everyday life, elevating them to a new status. Classic padded jackets, sweatshirts, fleeces, and accessories packed with functional details have moved beyond the mountains to conquer the streets.
