Sebago's Beginnings

Sebago was born in 1946 through the vision of Daniel J. Wellehan, the owner of five shoe stores in Maine, northeastern United States. Wellehan sought out the expertise of two local footwear manufacturers, William Beaudoin and Joseph Cordeau, to create his own brand.

The name originally was Sebago-Moc, a reference to its early designs (moccasins) and a nearby lake, called Sebago. In the Abenaki Native American language, Sebago means "long, narrow water basin." In the seventies, the name was simplified to the Sebago we know today.

Sebago's Nautical Experience

Sebago's early creations were related to water sports, and from there, designs like the Docksides (the popular boat shoes) emerged, soon becoming significant in popular culture. New models, like the outdoor Campside line broadened their influence across diverse realms, encompassing Preppy aesthetics, Ivy League culture, paninaro style, and hip hop scenes.

Becoming synonymous with style and handmade craftsmanship, Sebago boat shoes and moccasins have found a new place for generations that understand the brand's different interpretations. Elegant with a casual touch, they have grown with collaborations with Engineered Garments, C.P. Company, or Patta.
