The Air Jordan 3 was set to be released at a pivotal moment for Nike and Jordan. Tinker Hatfield, now regarded as one of the greatest designers in the history of trainers, had to create Jordan's new shoe in record time. Michael's renewal by Nike was dependent on its success.

The presentation of the first sketches of the AJ3 to Michael is one of the landmark moments in the history of sports marketing and design. It used for the first time the image we know today of Jordan jumping (recovered from a photo shoot of the Jordan 1), it was for the first time a model created according to Michael's tastes (neither High nor Low), and it brought two functional novelties: a visible Air unit and elephant print, a leather with a rough finish that protected where it was most needed.
