New Balance 990v7: Made in USA, a new generation

The original 990 was introduced in 1982 after four years of development dedicated to a single idea: creating the best running shoe possible. The result set a new standard for quality and performance and became the first running shoe to break the $100 barrier. But its significance didn’t stop at the track.

From the beginning, the 990 represented a different way of approaching a running shoe: quality materials, advanced technology and a strong focus on design. Over time, that combination allowed it to transcend its original purpose and become one of New Balance’s most recognisable silhouettes.

More than four decades later, the 990 is still built around that same premise. Its evolution has never simply been about changing for the sake of change, but about understanding which elements are part of its identity and which ones can move forward. Each new version has renewed the design while maintaining the balance of performance, comfort and aesthetics that defined the original 990.

Seven Chapters of the Same Story

1982 - 990

Since that first version in 1982, the 990 has evolved without fixed dates or deadlines. Only when necessary. Each new iteration brings a fresh interpretation of the silhouette, incorporating advances in materials, cushioning and construction while keeping its essential codes recognisable.

1998 - 990v2

The 990v2 arrived 16 years later, reflecting the technological and design advances of the time, with a sculpted midsole equipped with ABZORB cushioning.

2012 - 990v3

The 990v3 refined that identity for the new millennium. It introduced a new mesh construction, ABZORB and ENCAP cushioning, along with details such as the ridged N logo and diamond-patterned tongue, making it one of the most recognisable versions in the franchise.

2022 - 990v4

The 990v4 was the first to emerge in the social media era. Its redesign simplified the lines, softened the angles and refined the combination of ABZORB and ENCAP.

2019 - 990v5

That idea continued with the 990v5, which simplified the layered construction through new technological processes that allowed for an improved fit. Ortholite™ insoles were also introduced, adding an extra level of comfort.

2026 - 990v6

In 2022, the 990v6 was built around the removal of the traditional midfoot saddle, creating a new interplay of material overlays. For the first time, FuelCell technology appeared in a product that moved beyond pure performance.

2026 - 990v7

The new 990v7 arrives as a blend of heritage and evolution, understanding where the franchise comes from and where it can go next. After seven generations, the evolution of the 990 is not about starting from scratch, but about finding a new way forward.

990v7: Evolution Continues

The new 990v7 brings the franchise’s philosophy to a more refined and contemporary silhouette. Its upper combines breathable mesh with pigskin suede overlays, tumbled leather accents and synthetic suede sway bars, creating a construction with varied textures and a more elevated look.

Underfoot, the evolution continues. The full-length, dual-density FuelCell midsole features a softer heel and forefoot area for cushioning and energy return, while a denser structure provides support in the forefoot. ENCAP technology combines lightweight foam with a durable polyurethane rim, while a new TPU midfoot shank helps control movement and improve stability. At the heel, the CR device provides a secure, locked-in fit.

The result is a 990 designed for the present: more streamlined, more dynamic and crafted from premium materials, while remaining true to the balance of comfort, performance and design that has defined the franchise since 1982. Made in the USA, the 990v7 represents a new chapter in a story that has been evolving for more than four decades.
