Merrell's origins date back to 1981, when two managers of the Rosignol ski company, Clark Matis and Rob Szchweitzer, decided to embark on a new adventure: creating a mountain boot company. In order to do so, they partnered with Randal Ivan Merrell, a manufacturer of artisanal boots at €500 a pair, highly valued among his customers. But Clark and Matis had another plan in mind.
Both entrepreneurs wanted to bring nature and the mountains closer to everyone, moving away from an elitist conception of the practice of mountaineering. With this as their goal, they embarked together with Merrell on the design of a high-performance boot that would be affordable for the general public. The result was the legendary Moab, dropped in 1982, which is still being manufactured today.
A moment of evolution and growth
From 1983 to 1986, the company continued to grow, slowly but surely, moving the production of their footwear to selected factories in Italy. That very same year Merrell himself decided to come back to the artisanal manufacture of custom-made boots, selling his share of the company. They had just sold their 25,000th boot.
Following the acquisition of Merrell by the multinational Karhu in 1987, sales continued to grow, as well as the efforts to offer innovative and high quality products to its customers. A goal that has prevailed until today.
Merrell 1 TRL, Merrell's new premium line
Like other outdoor product firms - such as The North Face, Arc'teryx or Patagonia - the gorpcore trend - this is to say, the everyday use of garments for outdoor sports - has given Merrell a boost, putting it in the spotlight of a new audience.
As part of this growth, Merrell has launched its own sub-brand, Merrell 1 TLR, dedicated to outdoor footwear. A natural step in its evolution that presents a new aesthetic while preserving its professional ethos.
