In the late 70s and 80s, adidas released a series of shoes designed for niche sports under the Spezial name (e.g., Weightlifting Spezial, Rock Climbing Spezial, etc.). The most well-known of these specialist sport shoes is the Handball Spezial. This shoe played a key role in the original concept (and naming) of the adidas SPZL range: a shoe designed for a specialized sport like handball that, however, was adopted by youths for its aesthetic, despite having little or no interest in the sport itself. The Handball Spezial has been around for almost five decades and has returned as a contemporary silhouette.

The adidas Originals Handball Cup SPZL takes inspiration from the Handball Spezial but with modern touches that connect it to 80s handball shoes. It adopts the classic blue and white colorway of the Handball Spezial, with a touch of red, creating a new version that feels like an archival extension of one of adidas' greatest models.
